How to fix wireless networking problems

It is quite easy to build a wireless network these days. Most broadband service providers throw in a free wireless router with installation. All you need is a wireless network adapter in your computer. If you have a late-model computer, especially a laptop, it probably has wireless networking already built in. If not, just stick in a USB wireless network adapter and you are on your way.

While they are easy to install, wireless networks often have performance problems:

* Your computer may show a very weak signal strength
* Telephones, microwaves, or other appliances may interfere with the wireless signal
* The signal quality may fluctuate, or even disappear altogether, in different parts of your office or home
* The connection may be very slow

Here is how you can improve the performance of you underperforming wireless network:

1. Move wireless router to a better location

The biggest culprit for weak signals is the location of routers. Many routers are installed at less than ideal locations - under tables, in closets, in corners on the floor, and basements to name just a few. Many are installed near the outer wall of a building. This results in weak signals on the other end of the building.

It is often difficult to move a router too far away once it is installed. But it may be possible to move it by a couple of feet. Try moving it off the floor and away from the walls. If it is inside a closet, you may be able to get it out simply by drilling a hole in the wall for the cable.

2. Move wireless router away from other wireless equipment

Most wireless networks operate at 2.4MHz, the same frequency as older cordless telephones and other wireless gadgets. Signals from these gadgets may interfere with your router’s signals. You can try moving you router away from such equipment (or the equipment away from the router if you can’t move the router).

Another possible solution may be to upgrade your phones to newer ones which operate at 5.8MHz.

3. Get a high-gain antenna for your wireless router

If you can’t more the router, you can try replacing your router’s antenna with a high-gain antenna. You can’t replace antennas on all routers, but you can do so on many newer models.

Antennas on most routers have 360 degree coverage. If your router is located in one cornet of the building, a good part of its coverage area will lie outside the building. In such cases, you can get unidirectional high-gain antennas which transmit signals in 180 or even 90 degrees. Again, you must have router which allows you to replace its antennas.

4. Install a repeater

A repeater is a device for boosting wireless signals across greater distances. If your router’s signal is weak in a certain location in the building, you can place a repeater half way between the router and the location to boost the signal strength.

5. Upgrade your router’s firmware

Log in to your router’s administration interface. You will usually find an option to upgrade its firmware. Most people install routers and forget about them. You may be surprised to find that your router has several firmware upgrades that you haven’t applied.

6. Try changing your router’s broadcast channel

Most cordless telephones have a little button on the handsets which you can press to change the channel if there is noise on the line. Like cordless telephones, routers broadcast on many channels too. You may be experiencing weak or noisy signals simply because your router broadcasts on a channel that doesn’t work well at your location. Try changing the channel. You will find an option to change the channel in your router’s administration interface.

If fixes at the router end of your network don’t work very well, you can try fixes at the other end — your computer.

7. Update the network adapter on your computer

If you have a desktop computer with an internal network card, try using a USB network adapter instead. These adapters usually have an antenna of their own to better capture signals. Laptops with on-board network adapters are usually fine; you don’t need to replace them. But if you use a card adapter with your laptop, try getting one with an external antenna.

8. Update your computer’s network adapter drivers

Just as a router has firmware upgrades, the network adapter in your computer have driver updates. You can find driver updates at the adapter manufacturer’s website or at Windows Update web site.

If the signal strength doesn’t improve, you could try replacing your wireless router and network cards. You may have an old router which is based on the older 802.11b networking standard. 802.11g is the newer standard. 802.11g devices are several times faster that 802.11b devices. (802.11b devices operate an 11Mbps while 802.11g devices operate at 54 Mbps.)

802.11g devices are also backward compatible with 802.11b devices. In other words, if you buy a new 802.11g router, it will still work with the 802.11b network adapters in your computers. Still, if you upgrade your router to 802.11g, for best results you should consider upgrading network adapters in your computer to 802.11g as well.

If you decide to do so, consider buying extended-performance 802.11g devices which operate at twice the speed–108Mbps. But keep in mind that if you buy extended performance devices, you must buy all of them from a single manufacturer. Most manufacturers such as Netgear, Linksys, and D-Link make extended-performance 802.11g devices but they are not necessarily interoperable with devices from other manufacturers.

And if none of these solutions work, forget about wireless and go back to good old wired networking!

You Tube Banned In Turkey

You Heard it right. You Tube, Google self-acclaimed video sharer, is banned in Turkey. Reports says that the cause of the restriction is because You Tube contains videos that insults Turkey's officials. Insults Ranges from president up to their army. Even have a term "Turkishness" for the doings. Reporters acted too with what Turkey officials did because they said that banning a You Tube for just a small piece of it is a disproportionate measure. This is the second time that You Tube is Banned in Turkey (last March). Turkey will agree to remove the ban if You Tube removes all "Turkishness" in their space.

Thailand, Morroco and some nations are also banned for some other reasons.

Via Introduces 1-Watt Processor

Lets welcome the world first and most power efficient processor to be created. VIA ,known for creating chips for our computers, has created this baby that runs at 500Mhz for a TDP of 1 watt. I will just called this the most efficient at all. When idle, it consumes 0.1 watt. Now, that will save my power bill a lot for a year. Imagine what you can do with this processors. I'll name some, You can Download files, Browse the net, Post on a blog, run a server, play some games, and many more.
The VIA Eden ULV is a size of 21mm x 21mm. Runs in 400Mhz V4 bus clock and with 128kb L2 cache. Features a PadLock Security Engine for hardware encryption algorithms such as AES, SHA-1, SHA-256 and Montgomery Multiplier.
VIA also added that when combined with their
CX700/M chipset that will run for a 3.5watts consumption. So, VIA will assume that everything will just run under 10watts. Luckly, this processor is embedded into systems.
I hope I could purchase one so I can run a small server and a download center.

Net Sites: BitLet.org

Let me introduce you a new way of downloading .torrent files. I never can imagine that this will happen although website powered programs are common now a days but BitLet.org make it happen.

BitLet.org is a torrent downloading site that lets you download torrent files by just providing them the link of the torrent. This Java powered baby lets you download every torrent in town. All you need to do is have a link, set your connection, and click Download !!

Provide the links and click "Download Torrent" Button and a prompt window will appear that will ask where you will save the file.

After that the download window will appear and starts downloading your file until it finishes the whole file. Woahla you don't need to install another pesky torrent program.

If you click the "settings" link, you can access and change some setting concerning about your connection. You can set how much speed it has.

BitLet.org has a informative FAQ if a user is troubling how to use the site. Oh well, anyone can use this site.

If you scroll further you can see how to use the download interface and you can create a code for your torrent files that you can post to your site courtesy of BitLet.org.

I'll rate BitLet.org, maybe 7/10. Its under it's beta construction so expect more. Maybe my next visit will increase their rate from me. It is better if they can continue their downloads even the users didn't finish the whole time downloading the file.

Internet Lost But Found Again

I was terrified yesterday that I could not access some net sites. I thought it was dooms day for me. Yesterday was a very terrible day. Even my friends seems to have these symptoms too. I'm indeed in a state of shock for that time and I don't know what to do. I rush to the telephone and called my Internet Service Provider (ISP) and it was hell. The operators are not answering and they have to keep me on the line for a long time. Then a operator guy answered and I told him what happened. He replied to me that the interconnecting cables of the company that supplies the internet connection is lost. So thats why every people in town is troubled about their own Net connection. Now everything is stable a back to where it is. Thank God I won't have to suffer a longer waiting for a good connection.

Chipsets : Intel X38 Express Chipset

The New X38 Express Chipset by Intel is a definitely a replacement to the old 975X. It is the new high end chipset by Intel that was released last September 23, 2007.

X38 Express offers a LGA775 platform for Intel processors. It holds a great support for the new Bearlake line of processors that will be released later on this year and early months next year. That includes Intel's Core 2 Extreme and Quad-cores. X38 Express has a PCIe 2.0 standard and supports a full speed processing of 2 ATI Crossfire Cards. X38 Express greatly supports DDR3 and DDR2 (as shown on the diagram).

Today, this is what Intel has to offer to us but it wont stop there. There are more better chipsets to come from Intel. Too bad, I'm a Nvidia Lover and might not like the Crossfire Platform. But it is rumored that it will have SLi Support for Nvidia SLi Cards. So far so good for Intel. DDR3 is growing more popularly now a days so I wont expect that this will be a High-End for Intel.

AMD Releases Athlon 64 X2 Black Edition

Yes you heard it. AMD is realeasing some "Extreme Like Procesors" like this one. The AMD Athlon 64 X2 6400+ is more faster than a Core 2 Duo but will have a high 125 watt TDP. Runs in 3.2Ghz speed per core and will have 1MB L2 cache.

This new release wont be that much a hit because AMD will launch this silently into the market. So we won't be hearing much from hardware benchmarkers now a days but expect a low priced processor. A more drastic price that this processor will have to beat Intel's Core 2 Duo E6750.

Maybe we should wait for the next releases of AMD. Now, they are preparing for another war with Intel. Their weapons is Quad-cored processors and Low Energy Consuming Dual-Cores. Some game changer will be applied and you know what it is. Yeah !! You're right, Low Consumer Price. People should prepare their wallets for the great "Chip Wars."

Corsair's Flash Padlock Drive

Corsair is known for making great memory modules from SDRAM up to DDR3. Now, they introduced a "Flash Padlock Drive". The USB Drive tends to store files with indeed good PIN protection to prevent a hack through the drive by malicious hackers.

It has a 1GB and 2GB capacity for sale. Great for Professionals, Programmers, Encoders and etc. Specially for those that have a top secret files need to be hidden and must remain unknown to the outside world.

I dont think a hacker will get through this USB Drive. Indeed a great innovation by Corsair.
